Two women are dead after a single vehicle car crash in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Sandra Gail Freeman, 63, and Brenda Joyce Payne, 69, of Gainsville Georgia were both killed in the accident. Park rangers said Freeman died at the scene of the accident. Payne was taken to University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville where she later died from her injuries.

Rangers said the women were driving on Little River Road in their 2007 GMC Envoy at 1:39 p.m. Sunday, when the vehicle left the road. The car landed upside down in the river about three miles east of The Townsend Wye, according to rangers.

Both women were extricated from the vehicle. Park rangers, Rural/Metro, and the Townsend Fire Department responded to the scene.
