If you’re looking to escape the frequent traffic jams that you’ll encounter at Cades Cove, or if you’re just looking for a peaceful drive through the woods, Rich Mountain Road fits the bill.

Rich Mountain Road is an 8-mile, one-way, gravel road that provides stunning views down into Cades Cove.  The road heads north from the Cove over Rich Mountain to Tuckaleechee Cove and then back into Townsend, TN.

The entrance for Rich Mountain Rd. is near the halfway point around the Cades Cove Loop Road and across from Cades Cove Missionary Baptist Church.

Along the way you’ll encounter very little, if any, traffic. It will be one of the most remote locations in the Smokies you can travel to in the comfort of your own car. If you pull over to enjoy the occasional view into Cades Cove or just to take a short stroll into the woods the one thing you’ll notice most of all is the silence. All you’ll hear is the soothing sounds of nature surrounding you.

Rich Mountain Road is also a great place to see wildlife. If you stay alert you’re likely to catch sight of a black bear, deer or one of many other species of wildlife.

The road is closed during the winter months and may also be closed due to heavy rains at other times throughout the year.

Once you exit the Park, the road becomes very steep and winding so take it slow and be very cautious during your return trip.

So the next time you want to break free of a traffic jam in Cades Cove, or you just want a little peaceful solitude without leaving your car, give Rich Mountain Road a try. You’ll be glad you did.
